Adaptive local basis set for Kohn-Sham density functional theory in a discontinuous Galerkin framework I: Total energy calculation

چکیده
Kohn-Sham density functional theory is one of the most widely used electronic structure theories. Uniform discretization of the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian generally results in a large number of basis functions per atom in order to resolve the rapid oscillations of the Kohn-Sham orbitals around the nuclei. Previous attempts to reduce the number of basis functions per atom include the usage of atomic orbitals and similar objects, but the atomic orbitals generally require fine tuning in order to reach the chemical accuracy. We present a novel discretization scheme that adaptively and systematically builds the rapid oscillations of the Kohn-Sham orbitals around the nuclei as well as environmental effects into the basis functions. The resulting basis functions are localized in the real space, and are discontinuous in the global domain. The continuous Kohn-Sham orbitals and the electron density are evaluated from the discontinuous basis functions using the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) framework. Our method is implemented in parallel and the current implementation is able to handle systems with at least thousands of atoms. Numerical examples indicate that our method reaches the chemical accuracy with the number of the basis functions comparable to that in the tight binding method.

متن کاملChebyshev polynomial filtered subspace iteration in the discontinuous Galerkin method for large-scale electronic structure calculations.
The Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) electronic structure method employs an adaptive local basis (ALB) set to solve the Kohn-Sham equations of density functional theory in a discontinuous Galerkin framework. The adaptive local basis is generated on-the-fly to capture the local material physics and can systematically attain chemical accuracy with only a few tens of degrees of freedom per atom. A cent...
متن کاملDGDFT: A massively parallel method for large scale density functional theory calculations.
We describe a massively parallel implementation of the recently developed discontinuous Galerkin density functional theory (DGDFT) method, for efficient large-scale Kohn-Sham DFT based electronic structure calculations. The DGDFT method uses adaptive local basis (ALB) functions generated on-the-fly during the self-consistent field iteration to represent the solution to the Kohn-Sham equations. ...
متن کاملEfficient iterative method for solving the Dirac-Kohn-Sham density functional theory
We present for the first time an efficient iterative method to directly solve the fourcomponent Dirac–Kohn–Sham (DKS) density functional theory. Due to the existence of the negative energy continuum in the DKS operator, the existing iterative techniques for solving the Kohn–Sham systems cannot be efficiently applied to solve the DKS systems. The key component of our method is a novel filtering ...
متن کاملKohn-Sham density-functional theory within a finite basis set
The Kohn-Sham self-consistent equations, urnig a finite orbital basis expansion, are formulated for exchangecodation functionals which depend on local densities and their gradients. It is shown that these can be solved iteratively without evaluation of density Hessians. A general expression is given for the energy gradient (with respect to nuclear motion) after self-consistency has been achieved.
